This month a part of each of our full-body mannequins, specifically 5% of each, has turned pink. No, it’s not that we got confused when it comes to making them: this month we want to take part in a very special cause and help raise awareness about and prevent breast cancer.
It’s true that all diseases are important, but this one has a specific component that makes its visibility essential: according to the European Cancer Information System (ECIS), breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer in women, and the leading cause of cancer mortality in women. This means that, according to WHO data, one in twelve women will develop cancer in her lifetime. Fortunately, an early diagnosis increases the probability of being cured. In fact, if it is detected in its initial stage, it has close to a 100 percent chance of cure.
- To encourage women to carry out regular preventive breast self-exams at any age, in order to detect possible lumps or swelling in the breast, and to have annual mammograms starting at age 40. In this disease, early detection is a crucial factor.
- To contribute to breast cancer research. Although much progress has been made in recent years, there are still unknowns to be revealed such as, for example, why 30% of patients in stages I, II and III end up developing metastases over time, in addition to making discoveries in the development of more effective treatments.
